The US city of Milwaukee is known for its Harley Davidsons and free-flowing beer industry, and it's the latter subject that becomes the focus of Jerry Lee Lewis' 1968 country amble, "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)". "It's late and she's waiting / And I know I should go home / But ev'ry time I start to leave / They play another song / Then someone buys another round / And with every drink or three / What Made Milwaukee Famous / Has made a fool out of me," he begins in the opening verse of the song originally written by Glenn Sutton. Neither Glenn Sutton nor Jerry Lee Lewis could foresee the commercial value of the song, which – making an innocent reference to Schlitz beer, was adopted as an advertising slogan for years to come, "The beer that made Milwaukee famous." Jerry Lee Lewis did alright for himself out of the song though, scoring a Number 2 hit on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
