Johnny Paycheck was a controversial character in the world of outlaw country music, where songs of rebellion and booze-soaked partying mirrored a hard-living, outsider mindset. The Greenfield, Ohio-born troubadour rose to fame in the mid-1960s before jumping on the Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings-led outlaw bandwagon a decade later and enjoying success in that realm. Of all the rebel songs in his repertoire, "Colorado Kool-Aid" stood out as an unembellished hymn to disobedience and rejection of the established quo, a gravelly-sung tale of a bloody barroom brawl fueled by Coors beer (aka "Colorado Kool-Aid"). Despite its violent subject matter, "Colorado Kool-Aid" was a hit on country radio and became a staple of Johnny Paycheck's live performances, remaining a fan favorite to this day. The song was included on his most successful, platinum-certified album, Take This Job and Shove It (1977).
