"Bright Blue Rose" is an enduring folk ballad inextricably linked with celebrated Irish singer Mary Black, whose pristine voice and moving performance of the song earned her accolades across the board. "Bright Blue Rose" was originally penned by Macroom-born singer-songwriter Jimmy MacCarthy who crafted a treasure trove of compositions that included "Missing You" and "Mystic Lipstick," among others. Mary Black recorded her account of spiritual favourite "Bright Blue Rose" in 1991 for her album Babes in the Wood, also tackling a raft of other songs by Jimmy MacCarthy: "Katie," "Adam at the Window," "Diamond Days," "As I Leave Behind Neidín," "Shuffle of the Buckled" and "Another Day." Babes in the Wood followed Mary Black's best-selling Frontiers album of 1989—which hung around in the Irish Top 30 for 56 weeks—and 1993 effort The Holy Ground, which achieved platinum status in Ireland as well as seizing the number-one spot.
