Them Changes is a song by American songwriter and bass guitar virtuoso Thundercat (born Stephen Lee Bruner). The song was first released as part of Thundercat’s 2015 EP The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam, and would later go on to be a part of his 2017 full-length album Drunk. Working very often as a session musician, the majority of The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam was composed while Thundercat was working on the albums You’re Dead! (Flying Lotus), The Epic (Kamasi Washington), and To Pimp a Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar). As such, songs like Them Changes incorporate elements and influences from those other projects. In fact, it includes a saxophone solo from frequent collaborator Kamasi Washington. A jazz-funk song carried by the sound of Thundercat’s bass, the lyrics incorporate elements of psychedelia with the story of a doomed relationship. The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam was ranked Number 24 on Pitchfork’s list of “50 Best Albums of 2015.”
