After becoming one of the best-selling music artists in history during their initial ten-year run, the four members of ABBA decided to shy away from their pop-leaning tendencies and instead embrace a more mature, darker sound, heavily influenced by their then-recent divorces and the political upheaval of the Cold War era. Such is the case of "The Visitors," the title track from ABBA's 1981 eighth studio LP of the same name. Released as the album's fourth and final single on April 5, 1982, the song features layers of ominous synthesizers and lyrics about the dire situation of political dissidents in the Soviet Union. "The Visitors" was written and produced by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and features Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead vocals. Even though the single only managed to reach Number 63 on the US Billboard Hot 100, it became an unexpected hit in Costa Rica, reaching the top of the local charts upon its release.
