Drawing titular inspiration from the song "Head on Collision" by New Found Glory, pop-punk heroes All Time Low aka lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Alex Gaskarth, lead guitarist Jack Barakat, bassist/backing vocalist Zack Merrick, and drummer Rian Dawson assembled in 2003 made their debut two years later with The Party Scene. "Therapy," recorded six years after their arrival, is close to the pop-punk ideal of an earnest ballad and leans into a more sophisticated sound for the formerly scruffy rockers. The candid song, which Alex Gaskarth has said is about his personal experience of anxiety and depression, alludes to the importance of therapy as a lifetime to people in distress. "Therapy" closed out the band's third studio album Nothing Personal with an emotional clincher that highlights the record's wider underlying themes. The LP was a commercial success, going to number one on the US rock and alternative charts.
