"I Say a Little Prayer" is the soul anthem that turned Aretha Franklin into a superstar. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David during the period of the Vietnam War and originally released by Dionne Warwick in 1967, I Say a Little Prayer was a hit for Dionne Warwick—reaching number four on Billboard’s Hot 100 where it stuck around for 13 weeks—but Aretha Franklin took it as far as it could go, even if she ironically didn't climb any higher in the charts. Transposing up a tone from Dionne Warwick's G major to A major, "the Queen of Soul" filled every molecule of the pop song with her incomparable, unstoppable voice and in the summer of 1968, had transformed it into her defining hit, with the track featured on her 13th studio album Aretha Now (1968). "I Say a Little Prayer" started out as a lament for soldiers lost senselessly to war and by the time Aretha Franklin had finished with it, it became one of the modern world's most timeless, generation-spanning gems.
