Formed by Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk, Audioslave forged an explosive rock band who were able to move mountains with their metal-tinged outbursts. Featuring a classic rough-edged vocal delivery from the late Chris Cornell—who sounds believably menacing when he sings: "Suddenly a shot ripped into his heart / And he lay in need of some attention / And there he played his card, going into shock / The last thing that he said was, set this fucker off"—"Set It Off" can be filed under angst-driven hard rock smeared with a touch of industrial noise. The supergroup—notable for being the first US rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba with an audience of 70,000—included the track on their 2002 self-titled debut, for which they rallied world-famous producer Rick Rubin and signalled their arrival proper on the post-grunge scene.
