Australian rock troupe Australian Crawl – who blended surf music with pub-rock and an art-pop sensibility – stepped out with their statement-making debut single "Beautiful People" in 1979; a new wave-flavored pop-rock satire critiquing rich, pretentious, vacant scenesters. "I said-a beau–tiful people / They've got a Robert Palmer t-shirt in their travel bag / Beau–tiful people / They've got a price upon their head / I said-a beau–tiful people / Have got some friends who just flew in from LA, yeah / Beau–tiful people / They haven't really much to say," sings lead vocalist James Reyne in the opening verse. "Beautiful People," which was written by James Reyne and Mark Hudson and featured on Australian Crawl's debut album The Boys Light Up, (1980) – which reached Number 4 on the Australian Albums Chart – made it to Number 22 on the Australian Singles Chart.
