On 25 November 1984, Bob Geldof assembled an A-list cast comprising some of the UK and Ireland's biggest contemporary musicians to record what would become one of the festive season's most popular standards, and one of the fastest-selling singles in UK chart history. A charity single to highlight and raise money for the 1983-85 famine in Ethiopia, Do They Know It’s Christmas? was written by the aforementioned Boomtown Rats frontman and Midge Ure of Visage and Ultravox fame, and saw the likes of Sting, George Michael, Boy George, Kool & The Gang and many more stars from the era step up to form a supergroup called Band Aid. Do They Know It’s Christmas? raised more than $10 million and reached number one in the UK charts that Christmas where it stayed for five weeks. The song was later re-recorded and re-released in 1989, 2004, and 2014, with the latter re-release aimed at raising funds to help the 2014 Ebola crisis in West Africa.

The best instrumental out there, and the cover version is spot on for learning the song.
