"Never Say Die" was both the lead single and album opener of Black Sabbath's 1978 album of the same name. As such, the song served as an introduction to the band's new musical direction, which combined the sludgy, headbanging rock sound of their early days with influences from pop music and blues. Just like the rest of the LP, "Never Say Die" was entirely written and produced by the band. Its hopeful lyrics, in a way, mirrored Black Sabbath's situation at the time—frontman Ozzy Osbourne had quit the band in 1977 but rejoined in 1978 as all four members were struggling with substance abuse—offering a message of resilience in the face of adversity. Despite all of the turmoil within the band, "Never Say Die" became one of their most successful singles, peaking at number 21 in the UK and securing the band their first Top of the Pops appearance since the beginning of the decade. Never Say Die, the album, reached number 69 on the Billboard 200 and number 12 on the UK charts. It would be Black Sabbath's last studio LP with Ozzy Osbourne before 2013's 13.
