Considered one of the godfathers of heavy metal music, English rock band Black Sabbath had a lot to prove after their self-titled studio debut broke into the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Black Sabbath (1970) was a major commercial success for the group, who quickly headed into the studio later that year to record their sophomore album. Written at the very last minute, lead single "Paranoid" was released in August of 1970 and climbed to Number 4 on the UK Official Singles Chart, providing the band with their only Top 10 hit single in Great Britain. It also helped name its parent album after "War Pigs" was turned down by the label, who considered the title too offensive. The track succeeded in capturing the sound of Birmingham's industrial doom and gloom with a frantic guitar riff that would go on to attain iconic status. In the decades that followed its release, "Paranoid" became a classic in its own right, receiving the cover treatment by bands like Soft Cell, Weezer, and Megadeth.
