Originally written by country-rock grandee John Prine for his self-titled 1971 album John Prine, "Angel from Montgomery" is a soul-soothing meditation on aging and missed opportunity, shot through with vivid storytelling, a tender melody and a rodeo-ready chorus that goes: "Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery / Make me a poster of an old rodeo / Just give me one thing that I can hold on to / To believe in this living is just a hard way to go". Covered by everyone from Carly Simon (1972) to John Denver (1973), in 1974, slide guitar-playing roots legend Bonnie Raitt took her turn at the wheel and drove home a classic, receiving praise for her solo version of the song while also recording a much-loved duet version with John Prine himself. "Angel from Montgomery" was included on Bonnie Raitt's 1974 album Streetlights. The track also closes her 1995 live album Road Tested, where she is joined by Bryan Adams, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby and Kim Wilson.
