This enduring power ballad epic from Bonnie Tyler was released over forty years ago and yet hasn't lost any of its melodrama. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was written by Jim Steinman and recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler who achieved extraordinary success with the song that refuses to fade. Bestowed with the number one crown in the UK, US, and in numerous other countries around the world in 1983, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was a miracle of pop-rock theatre that went on to become one of the UK's favourite songs from the era. It's up there with some of the greatest power ballads to have walked the Earth, from Prince's "Purple Rain" to Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." But "Total Eclipse of the Heart" has the gothic credentials. The track, contained on Bonnie Tyler's fifth album Faster Than the Speed of Night (1983), was originally written with a score for a Nosferatu musical in mind.
