“Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by / You never get to stop and open your eyes,” sings Bruce Cockburn, urged along by a choppy, new wave–meets–heartland rock riff. 1980s alt-rock classic "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" was inspired by the Cold War but seeks to deliver a universal message about living for the moment ("Never a breath you can afford to waste"). The politically minded opening track of Bruce Cockburn's 1984 album Stealing Fire reached number 25 in Canada that year and in 2005 was named the 11th greatest Canadian song of all time on the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version. "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" was covered by Dan Fogelberg on his 1990 album The Wild Places and by the Barenaked Ladies on the 1991 Bruce Cockburn tribute album Kick at the Darkness, which is comprised entirely of cover versions of his songs. Bruce Cockburn has also been namechecked by Bono as an influence.
