"Panis angelicus" is the penultimate stanza of the medieval religious hymn "Sacris solemniis," written by influential 13th-century philosopher and theologian St. Thomas Aquinas for the feast of Corpus Christi. Along with other Corpus Christi hymns by the same author like "Adoro te devote," "Verbum supernum prodiens," and "Pange lingua gloriosi," it is often treated as a separate hymn from the original and has been set to music by several composers, including João Lourenço Rebelo, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, André Caplet, Saint-Saëns, and César Frank, who featured it on his Messe à Trois Voix in 1872. More recent renditions include a stunning live performance by Luciano Pavarotti and Sting on his 1993 live album Pavarotti and Friends, and a studio version by another Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli, who included "Panis angelicus" in his widely acclaimed 1994 studio debut, Il Mare Calmo della Sera.
