Leonardo da Vinci's iconic oil-painted artwork has been a source of inspiration to musicians from Santana (2019's "Do You Remember Me" to Madonna (2012's "Masterpiece") over the years, and in 1959 "The High Priest of Country Music" aka Conway Twitty drew from the painting's creative well. Nat King Cole originally went to number one on the Billboard chart in 1950 with his rendition of pop standard "Mona Lisa," written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the Paramount Pictures film Captain Carey, U.S.A. in 1949, and winning the Oscar for Best Original Song the following year. Just under a decade later, the rockabilly regent born Harold Lloyd Jenkins, and known by the stage name Conway Twitty, cracked the US Billboard Hot 100 and went to number five in the UK with his version of the song in which a lover compares his love to the titular painting ("Well, Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa men have named you / You're so like a lady with a mystic smile").
