"Tennessee Whiskey" is a song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove in 1981. After meeting at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, the pair headed to Linda Hargrove's house for an impromptu songwriting session in the wee hours of the morning. "Tennessee Whiskey," the resulting production of that fortunate encounter, was pitched to singer-songwriter David Allan Coe after country legend George Strait turned it down. Recorded in a more traditional country style, David Allan Coe's bourbon-soaked take on "Tennessee Whiskey" peaked at Number 77 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and was included as the first track on his 1981 album of the same name. In the years that followed, "Tennessee Whiskey" was further popularized by George Jones, whose version reached Number 2 on the US country charts in 1983. More recently, Chris Stapleton delivered an R&B-influenced rendition of the song that topped Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart following a live performance at the Country Music Association Awards with Justin Timberlake.
