First-wave punk trailblazers Dead Kennedys had one target in mind when they wrote the controversial, acerbic single "Holiday in Cambodia": the overprivileged. Released just a year after the original lineup of the Dead Kennedys had disbanded and reformulated – after dropping the Ronald Reagan-destroying EP, In God We Trust, Inc."Holiday in Cambodia" was among the bullets featured on their 1987 album Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death. The politically charged song –which was penned shortly after the genocidal dictatorship of the Khmer Rouge (led by Pol Pot and his Communist Party of Kampuchea) where it is estimated nearly a quarter of the Cambodian population were killed between 1975 and 1979 – the acid-tongued lyrics contain a racial slur intended to highlight the vacuity and virtue-signaling of the song's college student protagonists, which was later replaced with the word "brothers".
