"Brand New Lover" is the lead single of Dead or Alive's studio debut Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know, released in 1986. The song was written by frontman Pete Burns, Tim Lever, Mike Percy, and Steve Coy, and was produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. The track features prominent use of western motifs, synthesizers, and drum machines, and is known for its catchy, dance-friendly beat. Lyrically, "Brand New Lover" is about the hedonistic urge to leave a stable relationship for an exciting new romantic adventure. Even though it failed to enter the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart upon its release (something Pete Burns blamed on a lack of promotion by their label), "Brand New Lover" enjoyed considerable commercial success abroad, reaching Number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 2 on the Oricon Singles Chart. Eventually, "Brand New Lover" became one of Dead or Alive's most well-known songs and remained both a fan favorite and a staple of the band's live performances.
