The story of an aimless traveler who goes from town to town engaging in short-lived flings, the early rhythm-and-blues classic "The Wanderer" was written by Ernie Maresca in the early 1960s. After New York-based doo-wop group Nino and the Ebb Tides passed on the opportunity to record it, the song was offered to rock and roll singer Dion DiMucci, who had already turned the composer's "Runaround Sue" into a Number 1 hit in the US a few months earlier. Even though it was originally released as the B-side to "The Majestic," the song gained popularity amongst radio DJs and quickly outperformed its A-side, reaching Number 2 in the US, Number 10 in the UK, and Number 1 in Australia. Featuring uncredited background vocals by the vocal group Del-Satins and a whole host of A-list session musicians, "The Wanderer" was later included in Dion's 1961 studio debut Runaround Sue, which peaked at Number 11 on the Billboard 200. In the years that followed, the song was covered by artists like The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, and Status Quo.
