After leaving his band Sons of the Soil, with whom he made his first releases for Mercury Records in 1949, American singer-songwriter Don Gibson made a trip to Nashville to record a couple of songs of his own authorship with producer Chet Atkins. "Oh Lonesome Me," one of his first hits, came out in 1957 via RCA Victor, and quickly soared to the top of the country charts in the United States, staying there for a total of three non-consecutive weeks. It also featured backing vocals by The Jordanaires and reached Number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his only Top 10 hit single on the pop music charts. A heartbreaking story of unrequited love, "Oh Lonesome Me" rapidly became one of Don Gibson's trademark songs and would set the sonic blueprint for the rest of his career. Over the course of the next few decades, the song was covered by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and the Kentucky Headhunters.
