Formed in 1968, American rock band Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show gained a considerable following in the 1970s through their effortless pairing of rock and roll with genres such as country, blue-eyed soul, and even disco. During the first half of their career, Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show collaborated extensively with poet Shel Silverstein, who wrote some of the band's biggest hits, including "Sylvia's Mother" (1972), "The Cover of Rolling Stone" (1972), and "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" (1974). In 1975, the band shortened its name to simply Dr. Hook and dropped their fourth LP Bankrupt, which featured the novelty song "I Got Stone and I Missed It." Written by Shel Silverstein, the track is a cautionary tale about the perils of smoking too much marijuana and missing out on life. Even though Dr. Hook's version didn't make it to the charts, "I Got Stoned and I Missed It" was turned into a hit later that year by singer-songwriter Jim Stafford, whose version peaked at Number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
