Ernest Keith Smith, known mononymously as Ernest, began his career writing songs for controversial country star Morgan Wallen before stepping out on his own in 2019 and signing a deal with Nashville tastemakers Big Loud. A native of Nashville, he melded a love of hip-hop with his country roots for country-rap singles like "Dopeman" and "Bad Boy", before later steering his sound towards the steel-streaked trad country of 2022 album Flower Shops. With Morgan Wallen featured on the title track, the LP made a dent on the US Billboard 200 (charting at Number 150) and this all-American love song has pride of place as the second track on the record. "Tennessee Queen" doubles up as a love letter to his home state as well as a valentine to his lover and future wife, seeing out the chorus with a reference to the King of Rock 'n' Roll; "Oh, I can be your Elvis, honey, you can be my Tennessee queen".
