American rock band Faith No More broke into the scene with their 1990 single Epic,” which featured a fusion of hard rock, metal, and rap. But the group’s follow-up work would prove to be even more eclectic, mixing elements of genres such as soft rock and jazz. The band’s 1995 single Evidence is a good example of this, featuring influences of R&B and soul. The song was recorded as part of the group’s fifth studio album King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime (1995), released as the album’s third promotional single. At the time of its recording, Faith No More was undergoing a transition as their lineup had changed with the departure of guitarist Jim Martin. Evidence was written by Billy Gould, Mike Bordin, Trey Spruance, and Mike Patton. It was produced by Faith No More in collaboration with producer Andy Wallace. Evidence failed to gain much traction in the United States, but it hit the top of the UK Rock & Metal chart, as well as making it to Number 32 on the UK Singles chart. It was also critically acclaimed and went on to become a fan favorite.
