In 1961, he married Mattie Louise Bivins when he was 17 and she was 15. Watson recorded many hits including "Farewell Party" and "Love in the Hot Afternoon." His career has spanned over 50 years and although he isn't as well-known as other traditional country artists like Merle Haggard or George Jones, he is one of the most respected vocalists in the genre.
