By the dawn of the 1980s, singer-songwriter Gene Watson was already a veteran of the country music scene, with over a dozen hit singles under his belt, including "Love in the Hot Afternoon" (1975), "Paper Rosie" (1977), and "Should I Come Home (Or Should I Go Crazy)" (1979). In 1981, his tenth album Old Loves Never Die proved the Houston native was still going strong with singles like "Fourteen Carat Mind," which rose to the top of Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and "Speak Softly (You're Talking to My Heart)," an uptempo country number about a relationship on the verge of a breakup. Written by Jesse Mendenhall and Steve Purgin, the song was released as the second single from Old Loves Never Die and reached Number 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. It also became quite popular in Canada, where it peaked at Number 4. In time, "Speak Softly (You're Talking to My Heart)" became one of Gene Watson's trademark songs and made its way to several compilations by the country singer.
