Motown had 79 songs in the top 10 between 1960-1969. Often a song would be recorded by several Motown artists. Gladys Night & the Pips had a #1 R&B Billboard hit with "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" before Marvin Gaye released the version most people are familiar with. When Stevie Wonder recorded his smash "For Once In My Life" it was arranged as an uptempo but a few years later, Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded the song as a tender love ballad. The arrangement was perfectly suited for Knight’s beautiful and expressive voice.
