"The Old Black Rum" is a song by Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea. It was written by founding Bob Hallett and included in their 1995 second studio album, Up. Just like the rest of their catalog, "The Old Black Rum" draws inspiration from traditional Newfoundland songs and all kinds of Celtic music, mainly sea shanties. In contrast with the track's fun, uplifting vibes, its humorous lyrics serve as a cautionary tale against alcohol abuse, describing a series of episodes involving an alcoholic man who is completely taken over by his addiction.
