"The Old Black Rum" is a song by Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea. It was written by founding Bob Hallett and included in their 1995 second studio album, Up. Just like the rest of their catalog, "The Old Black Rum" draws inspiration from traditional Newfoundland songs and all kinds of Celtic music, mainly sea shanties. In contrast with the track's fun, uplifting vibes, its humorous lyrics serve as a cautionary tale against alcohol abuse, describing a series of episodes involving an alcoholic man who is completely taken over by his addiction. Despite not having been released as a proper promotional single, "The Old Black Rum" eventually became a favorite among Great Big Sea's fanbase as well as a staple of their repertoire, with live versions showing up on 2000's Road Rage, 2004's Great Big DVD and CD, and 2011's Great Big Sea (Live). Up, its parent album, was the band's first charting release, reaching number 45 on the Canadian charts and obtaining quadruple platinum certification.
