In a matter of years, Massachusetts natives Highly Suspect went from playing covers at local bars and venues in the Cape Cod area to becoming one of the most celebrated alternative rock acts of the 2010s. After independently releasing a handful of EPs, the group began teasing their studio debut in 2015 with the single "Lydia," a bleak tale of a relationship gone awry due to the narrator's struggles with substance abuse. Written by Highly Suspect and produced by Joel Hamilton, the song appeared for the first time in their 2013 EP Black Ocean and was later re-recorded for Mister Asylum, the band's major-label debut. Shortly after its official release on March 4, 2015, "Lydia" entered the Top 5 of the Mainstream Rock chart in the US and peaked at Number 26 on the US Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. It also obtained Gold certification in the United States and received a nomination for Best Rock Song at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
