"In-A-Gadda-Da-Via" is the calling card of Californian psych-rock luminaries that not only launched the band's career but ultimately shaped a whole sound, blazing a trail for hard-rock. In its original album form, the 1968 song comprised an expansive 17-minute odyssey, whittled down to a neat two-minute-52-second single version that traverses an epic drum solo from Ron Bushy and mystical lyrics about love and Adam and Eve; the original title of the song was "In the Garden of Eden" until a drunken pronunciation from frontman Doug Ingle produced the "In-A-Gadda-Da-Via" title that stuck. After peaking at number 30 in the US, the track became the sole Top 40 hit for Iron Butterfly, who had formed in San Diego two years prior to its release. However, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" formed the title track of the band's acclaimed, heavy-hitting second studio album, which ended up becoming the US album with the most sales in 1969.
