"I'd Rather Have Jesus" is a classic religious hymn penned by Canadian gospel singer George Beverly Shea. The song came about in 1932 while the composer was sitting at the piano and his mother brought him a piece of paper with a poem for him to read. Written in 1922 by Christian writer Rhea Miller, the poem was titled "I'd Rather Have Jesus Than Silver or Gold" and it left such a strong impression on George Beverly Shea that, encouraged by his mother, he decided to put music to the words. Featuring a powerful message about loving God over any sort of material wealth, "I'd Rather Have Jesus" quickly became a staple of American Christian music, spawning several cover versions over the following decades. Apart from the original recording, one of the most known renditions of "I'd Rather Have Jesus" is by American popular singer Jim Reeves, who infused the song with a healthy dose of country twang on his 1962 gospel studio album, We Thank Thee.
