Joe Harris' rendition of the song became his second major hit after "Eerst zien en dan geloven" and "Schwabadaba ding ding," which reached the Top 10 in Belgium. "Drink rode wijn" peaked at number 8 on the Ultratop 5, staying in the chart for 9 weeks. The track's original version was largely inspired by a trip Udo Jürgens took to the Greek island of Rhodes.
