In what is widely considered to be a bucolic anthem of the Western genre, an aimless protagonist learns to be a farmer, learns to read the seasons, and learns to love the land. "Wild Montana Skies" was released as a single from John Denver's 17th studio album It's About Time (1983), which also featured vocal contributions from Patti Austin and Rita Marley and The Wailers ("World Game"). The LP, which was dedicated to John Denver's father Lt. Col. (Ret.) H.J. "Dutch" Deutschendorf, went to number 61 on the US Billboard 200. It's About Time was the follow-up to his 1982 offering Seasons of the Heart, on which he chronicled his love for this soon-to-be ex-wife, Annie.
