In Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings' jangling 1978 duet "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang," a prison inmate is forced to reflect on his life from the four walls of his cell. In the chorus, he sings of the four lessons he's learned: "There ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman", "I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James", "You don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi", and "There ain't no good chain gang". Written by Hal Bynum and Dave Kirby, and recorded by the powerhouse country duo of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" was released in May 1978 as the second single from Johnny Cash's 57th album I Would Like to See You Again (1978) and went all the way to Number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" marked the beginning of a fruitful collaborative relationship between Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, who would go on to record numerous songs together throughout the '80s.
