Cheeky chappie Lewis Capaldi had yet to reach the heights of world fame when "Bruises" was first released in March 2017, the lead single from his debut EP Bloom and his debut studio album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. Largely thanks to the success of his breakthrough single "Someone You Loved," which was released in November 2018 and shot to the top of the UK Singles Chart – also receiving a nomination for Song of the Year at the 62nd Grammy Awards and an award for Song of the Year at the 2020 Brit Awards – "Bruises" found itself thrust into the spotlight. This heartbreak ballad is weighed down by sadness ("There must be something in the water / 'Cause every day, it's getting colder / And if only I could hold you / You'd keep my head from going under") in which Lewis Capaldi sings honestly about the pain of missing someone: "I've been told, I've been told to get you off my mind / But I hope I never lose the bruises that you left behind / Oh my lord, oh my lord, I need you by my side."
