As the opener for Lizzo's fourth studio effort Special (2022), "The Sign" sets the tone for the rest of the album as the singer reacquaints herself with the audience in her usual her over-the-top fashion. Written by Melissa Viviane "Lizzo" Jefferson with Theron Thomas, Eric Frederic, Michael Neil, and Nate Mercereau, and produced by Phoelix and Ricky Reed, "The Sign" is an uptempo pop song in which Lizzo delivers an update on her personal life while displaying tons of bravado during her rapping verses. The singer had originally intended to place a sad song about love and loss as track one but ultimately decided to put "The Sign" first because it better conveyed the album's theme and overall energy. Even though it failed to enter the charts in the United States, "The Sign" was a moderate hit in New Zealand, where it reached Number 15. Its parent album Special, on the other hand, debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
