Celebrated composer and lyricist Tim Minchin won the Olivier Award for Best West End Musical for his critically acclaimed work on hit musical Matilda, which is based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl and first premiered in December 2010. Sung by an ensemble cast, "When I Grow Up" was the first song Tim Minchin wrote for the musical and harnesses the power and innocence of a child's imagination. "When I grow up / I will be tall enough to reach the branches... I will eat sweets every day on the way to work / And I will go to bed late every night... I will be strong enough to carry all / The heavy things you have to haul around with you." The hopeful yet naive song soundtracks a point in the narrative when the mistreated children, relentlessly oppressed by Miss Trunchball, envision a brighter future defined by freedom and self-determination."When I Grow Up" taps into that universal childlike longing to be an adult.

I went and saw this play in London. I think (personally) it was the best song out of the lot!
