The canon of traditional Irish and Scottish folk has been ripe for revival at various points over the decades. In the 2020s, the genre saw a renaissance led by groups such as the Mercury Prize-nominated Lankum and the Gloaming, who could often be heard putting a contemporary spin on timeworn sounds. In 2024, Scottish singer Nathan Evans took inspiration for his new single "Heather on the Hill" from the resurgence of interest in anything folk. The Airdrie-born star initially rose to fame during the sea shanty craze in 2020, posting videos of himself singing sea shanties on TikTok that ultimately led to a record deal with Polydor and a smash hit single in 2021 offering "Wellerman," the track with which he made his name. He stayed on dry land for "Heather on the Hill," his wistful cover of the stage song set in the Scottish Highlands that was written by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner for the 1947 musical Brigadoon.
