After forming in Louisville, Kentucky in the early 1960s, first as the Nite-Liters and later briefly as Love, Peace & Happiness, New Birth finally came into being in 1971. They sealed their fate the following year with their winning take on Bobby Womack and The Valentinos' "I Can Understand It," which cracked the Billboard R&B top 10. By 1975 they had six albums for RCA under their belt before a fortuitous move to Buddah Records gave them their first and only number one R&B single in "Dream Merchant." Written by Larry Weiss and Jerry Ross, the R&B ballad was originally recorded by Jerry Butler in 1967 as "Mr. Dream Merchant" and soaked up some of the swirling panoramic pop sounds of the era while keeping its feet firmly fixed on solid soul ground. New Birth’s cover of "Dream Merchant" was one of the three songs to take them to the R&B top ten; it was one of two New Birth entries to hit the top 40, reaching number 36 on the pop chart.
