"Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow"), a traditional American folk song, has its origins shrouded in mystery. The tune was first published by Kentucky fiddler Dick Burnett in 1913 under the name "Farewell Song," though its authorship is still not clear. It was first recorded in 1928 by Emry Arthur, a friend of Burnett's that also claimed to have written it. The song, a melancholic tale of a life fraught with sorrow and hardship, rapidly embedded itself into the tapestry of American folk and bluegrass music, with numerous versions recorded by artists like the Stanley Brothers and Bob Dylan. However, it was the 2000 version by the fictional band, Soggy Bottom Boys, from the Coen Brothers' film O Brother, Where Art Thou? that elevated the song to mainstream prominence. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the reimagining featured vocals by Dan Tyminski, Harley Allen, and Pat Enright, and was largely based on The Stanley Brothers' version. This rendition won the Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 2002 and peaked at Number 35 on the US Hot Country Songs.
