Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's music tips towards the expansive side of synth-pop, favouring atmospheric moods as much as catchy, era-defining melodies like 1980's landmark anti-war smash hit "Enola Gay." Produced by Stephen Hague and engineered by Tom Lord-Alge, "(Forever) Live and Die" is a classic case in point. The 1986 song, released as the first single from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's seventh studio album The Pacific Age (1986) shows Paul Humphreys's crystal chandelier vocal in its element as he croons the chorus: "People like us / I never know, I never know, I never know, I never know why / You make me wanna cry / I never know, I never know, I never know, I never know why / Forever live and die." The single went as far as number 11 on the UK Singles Chart as well as bracing the Canadian top ten with its presence and ultimately made it to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.
