Despite being fired from the ranks of heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath in 1979 due to substance abuse issues, English singer Ozzy Osbourne managed to bounce back from adversity rather quickly, releasing his critically acclaimed studio debut Blizzard of Ozz in 1980. The album reached Number 6 in the UK and Number 21 on the Billboard 200 thanks to hits like "Crazy Train," "Mr. Crowley," and the controversial "Suicide Solution." Released in 1981, his second full-length Diary of a Madman also enjoyed great popularity on both sides of the Atlantic, peaking at Number 16 in the US and Number 14 in the United Kingdom. Just like its predecessor, Diary of a Madman heavily relied on the neoclassical virtuosity of guitarist Randy Rhoads, who co-wrote most of the songs on the LP with Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Bob Daisley, and drummer Lee Kerslake. Besides featuring the charting singles "Flying High Again" and "Over the Mountain," the album also included the fan favorite "Believer," an eerie-sounding hard rock number with an inspirational message of self-confidence. Diary of a Madman would be Ozzy Osbourne's last album with Randy Rhoads before the guitarist's untimely death in 1982.
