Peter Gabriel's fourth album Security was a homage to his ever-growing interest in African folk drumming and sampling technology. To record the album he bought a CMI Fairlight synthesizer – famously used by Kate Bush for those glass-shattering sounds in "Hounds of Love" and her iconic fifth album of the same name – and began feeding his field recordings into the machine. For "I Have the Touch," he programmed a newly created Linn LM-1 drum machine and as well as the Fairlight CMT, also using a Prophet-5 and Polymoog. The song, which is sandwiched between "San Jacinto" and "The Family and the Fishing Net" on 1982's Security (originally called Peter Gabriel everywhere except from the US) is a twitchy, futuristic-sounding excursion into our primal human need for skin contact, which is summed up best in the bridge that closes out the track: "Pull my chin, stroke my hair, scratch my nose, hug my knees / Try drink, food, cigarette, tension will not ease."
