The atmospheric opening track of Phyllis Hyman's 1986 album Living All Alone closes in on you like a foggy night in December. Over a steamy stew of melancholy and shimmer, the late Philadelphia singer, songwriter, and actor – who died by suicide in 1995 – rues the end of a relationship and the loneliness of her newfound singledom. "Yesterday I was somebody's baby", she sings. "Now today I'm a woman on my own". This synth-powered torch song exemplifies the late '80s Philly soul sound that was still simmering away. It became one of Phyllis Hyman's signature hits, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard R&B singles chart and awash with the sense of sadness that often crept into her work. Released by Philadelphia International Records, Living All Alone was her seventeenth album and featured the production prowess of Philly soul originals LeRoy Bell (guitar, drums, percussion) and Thom Bell (synthesizer, piano), among other personnel.
