American rock band player released their cover of "This Time I'm in It for Love" in 1979, as the second single from their self-titled debut studio album. It served as the immediate follow-up to the group’s debut single "Baby Come Back,” which was also their biggest hit. But far from being a sophomore slump, “This Time I’m in It for Love” was a highly successful single for the group, hitting Number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and spending four months on the US charts. However, the song wasn’t a surefire hit; it had already been released as a single twice before by other artists, Austin Roberts in 1976 and Cyndi Grecco in 1977. Both times, the singles failed to chart. However, Player injected the song with the kind of soft rock sound that was quickly taking over the radio in the mid and late 1970s, making it feel more relevant and modern and helping its chances in the charts.
