Dolly Parton's appointment on Porter Wagoner's much-loved TV show The Porter Wagoner Show – and her ensuing musical partnership with the American country singer and entertainer in the late '60s – was arguably the making of her career, giving her a vital platform to reach a wider audience. Written by Carl Butler, and originally a hit for Carl Smith in 1951, "If Teardrops Were Pennies" frames the moment in Dolly Parton's career just before she ascended to the heights of superstardom. The peppy heartbreaker ("The heartaches you've caused me won't pay for a ring") sees Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton do what they do best: toe-tapping country with a sad core. The duet became the pair's highest-charting hit at the time, rising to number three on the US country chart in 1973, only knocked off its perch the following year by chart-topper "Please Don't Stop Loving Me". That same year, the pair ended their professional relationship, although in later years restored their friendship.
