American rock band R.E.M. went from scrappy indie darlings in the early 1980s to internationally famous, platinum-selling powerhouses in the 1990s. One of their early songs to make considerable waves beyond the college radio circuit is “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry),” a track from their 1984 album, Reckoning. Featuring the group’s distinctive early jangle pop sound and melancholy vibe, the song was released as the album’s first single and went on to become one of the group’s most popular tunes. Singer and lyricist Michael Stipe has said that “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” was inspired by the heavy rainstorms that often swept through their town of Athens, Georgia, during the summer months. Its lyrics juxtapose the imagery of rainstorms with a growing sense of longing and romantic disappointment. “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” was written by band members Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe. It was produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon. It peaked at Number 85 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the second R.E.M. single to appear on the chart.
