"Gates Of Babylon" is a song by Rainbow from their third studio album Long Live Rock ’n' Roll. The song features the band's original vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Although the late singer was relatively small, 5'4", his voice was huge. He's considered one of the best voices in heavy rock. He's also known for popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture. In 2003, a freak accident with a garden gnome severed his thumb. Dio was concerned he would no longer be able to make his signature "metal horns" gesture but a doctor was able to reattach it. "Gates of Babylon" contains medieval-themed lyrics sung over a blues-meets-baroque influenced track featuring Richie Blackmore's groundbreaking guitar work. Blackmore also played bass on the track after the original bassist was fired. The enigmatic guitarist held a seance during the recording of the album which was recorded at the Château d’Hérouville, a home of the composer Frédéric Chopin.
