Iconic punk rock four-piece The Ramones were all about speed, volume, and melodies. And when they weren’t recording their own original songs, they were looking through old pop radio favorites that they could inject their own brand of accelerated tempos and buzzsaw guitars into. Do You Want to Dance,” a song written by American singer Bobby Freeman and first recorded in 1958, was the perfect contender for the Ramones treatment: short, snappy, filled with teenage longing, and above all—easy to play. Acts like Cliff Richard and The Shadows and The Beach Boys had already tried their hand at it. The group recorded their version of the song for their third album, 1977’s Rocket to Russia. It was produced by Tony Bongiovi and Tommy Erdelyi (also known as Tommy Ramone). The Ramones' version, retitled Do You Wanna Dance?,” was also released as the third single from the album. Rocket to Russia would go on to peak at Number 49 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
